This is a serious tour, long days and big miles - but hey the sun doesn’t ever want to go down, you get to visit the most northerly tip of our Continent, stay with reindeer herders and meet Santa.
We meet at Harwich for the overnight ferry to Esbjerg, Denmark then ride to Frederikshavn for another ferry into Oslo. This is now the only ferry route from the UK to Norway and for me is the easiest way of getting started for the long trip north. The long days are hugely rewarding riding through spectacular scenery as we head for Nordkapp, which we will reach for the next weekend and have a two night stop to fully explore from our base in Svarsvag (they claim it to be the northernmost fishing village in the world no less..).
Navigation is straightforward - we are almost on the one road the entire way, apart from our stay in the Lofoten Islands on the way up.
From Nordkapp we head south into Finland riding through Lappland and staying in the land of the Saumi people a reindeer herding community. Next stop is to check up on Santa and your Christmas card list, as we really will visit the real home of Santa Claus near Rovenemi - I challenge you not to get a little bit excited-even the biggest humbugs of you! Then it is down through Sweden and back to Oslo and the ferries home arriving back to Harwich on the Monday.
Although it might not sound like much, the longest mileage days will be 375 - which takes some time to complete and Norwegian police are very good at keeping folk to the max speed of 50mph on the main roads.
Most people will have heard that Scandinavia is expensive and it is - we will be staying in low end hotel/hostal accommodation and some of the fantastic Scandinavian wooden chalets too. Breakfast and evening meal is included in the cost as well as the ferry connections. There are some local tolls on tunnels which aren’t included. But the higher cost is so worth the experience of taking your bike to these stunning countries.
